The Cordillera Blanca is Peru’s undisputed climbing and walking centre. Multi-day hikes can be organised here as well as day trips. Three hours from Huaraz is the site of Chavín de Huantar, a fascinating fortress temple believed to have been built over 2,500 years ago.
The town of Huaraz, at 3,050m, is capital of the Ancash region and nestles amongst the soaring magnificent peaks and glaciers of the Cordillera Blanca. The town itself is not particularly picturesque, the majority of its buildings having been destroyed by an earthquake in 1970.
